How Porcelain Crowns Can Give You a Beautiful Smile

Crowns are often useful for restoring strength and function to teeth injured by decay, dental erosion, or trauma, since they cover and protect damaged teeth and restore their shape, appearance, and chewing surface. In the past, crowns were made of porcelain but lined with metal, and they often created dark lines by the gums. However, porcelain crowns are now available at our Charlotte, NC dental center, making dental crowns an attractive option for patients needing to restore damaged teeth.

Porcelain crowns have great aesthetic potential, as they can allow your teeth to be beautiful, natural-looking, and completely metal-free. These restorations provide all the necessary strength, without detracting from the beauty of your smile. Porcelain crowns are so attractive they can even be used in a dramatic smile makeover! In addition to placing our own porcelain crowns, our dentists take pride in replacing old, noticeable, or unstable metal crowns with beautiful porcelain restorations.   Some of the latest dental materials to be accepted by the dental industry are all Zirconium crowns, commonly referred to as Bruxzir™ crowns.  These crowns are incredibly durable and perform very well for almost every patient.  IPS e.max™ crowns are also incredibly durable and are now widely accepted by dentists to create beautiful smiles. We use both of these materials, fabricated in only the best dental laboratories, in our dental practice.  To learn more about the benefits of having your smile restored with porcelain crowns, contact the Ballantyne Center for Dentistry today.

Porcelain Dental Bridges

Why is a porcelain dental bridge a good option for many patients?

For patients who are missing one or more teeth, a porcelain bridge can be an excellent option. It can be a less expensive option, especially for the patient whose gums and remaining tooth structure are healthy enough to support the restoration. Today, dental bridges are also attractive and can provide a beautiful result.

Old metal bridges, like metal crowns, can lead to an unsatisfactory cosmetic result. For that reason, the Ballantyne Center for Dentistry offers porcelain dental bridges. We can replace old, unsightly metal bridges with porcelain ones. These porcelain bridges blend flawlessly with natural teeth and can be used as part of a complete smile makeover, restoring both function and aesthetic appeal to damaged smiles. Similar materials used in dental crowns as mentioned above, are now used in fixed dental bridges as well.  You can have your missing teeth replaced in one office visit! How are teeth prepared for crowns?

It normally takes two dental appointments to prepare a tooth to receive a crown and then place the crown. During the first appointment, we remove a very thin layer of tooth enamel in order to make room for the crown. A digital impression can be taken of the tooth and emailed to the dental laboratory that constructs the crown. A temporary crown is placed to protect the prepared tooth.

The second appointment is scheduled a few weeks later when the customized crown is ready. The temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is cemented into place.

Does it hurt to have a crown placed?

No, the tooth receiving the crown is numbed during the preparation and placement process.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dental Bridges

Dental Bridges Charlotte, NCWhat is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a device that closes the gap left by a missing tooth.

What are the different types of dental bridges?

Traditional bridges are constructed from two or more crowns that support an artificial tooth. The artificial tooth fits into the space and the crowns are cemented onto the teeth on either side of the space.

Cantilever bridges are usually placed where there are existing teeth on only one side of the gap. Like traditional bridges, cantilever bridges have three crowns, but they are arranged differently. The artificial tooth is usually located on the outside of the two crowns.

Maryland bridges are constructed from an artificial tooth fused to metal bands or clips. The artificial tooth fits into the gap and the metal bands are bonded to the surrounding teeth to hold the tooth in place. Maryland bridges are usually placed on the front teeth.

Dental Bridges FAQ CharlotteHow many appointments does it take to place a bridge?

It usually takes two appointments to prepare and place a dental bridge. During the first appointment, the teeth receiving the crowns are prepared, and digital impressions are taken to send to the laboratory constructing the bridge. A temporary bridge can be placed at that visit.
